Updates to ICD-10-CM

Published September 30, 2022 by Carol Hamerski

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued ICD-10-CM code system updates. The 2023 updates include the addition of 1176 new billable healthcare codes to be used for patient encounters and discharges occurring from October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2023. Many of the code additions are in the areas of dementia, endometriosis, pregnancy, maternal care, and social determinants of health (SDoH).

Providers should ensure that their systems are up to date in advance of the October 1 deadline. In addition to the 1176 new codes, there are 251 codes that are now invalid. Resources to assist with the updating process are available for download from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website. Available resources include:

  • 2023 Conversion Table
  • 2023 Code Descriptions in Tabular Order
  • 2023 Addendum
  • 2023 Code Tables, Tabular and Index
  • FY 2023 ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines

While there are substantial changes for some specific areas of practice, all providers should review the list to become familiar with changes that specifically impact their practices.
